Cana
This morning, we started of in Cana of Galilee where we visited a church that is said to be where Jesus performed his famous sign in John’s gospel of turning water into wine. The stone jars that were used were the only material that can get clean, and in the video below you can see just one part of the big stone jar.
Some folks in our group were able to renew their Marriage Vows at Cana, which was pretty special in and of itself!
Part of the video above includes our trip to Nazareth and the Church of the Annunciation where Mary is said to have received the message about Jesus’ birth from the angels. You’ll see our lunch was a schwarma sandwich and pomegranate juice from a local restaraunt.
Mt. Tabor and Magdala
We then visited Mt. Tabor after lunch which is home to the church of the transfiguration. We learned about the history of the land including the journey to get from Mt. Tabor to Jerusalem and some particulars of the Transfiguration narrative.
Our final stop for today was in Magdala – the home of Mary Magdalene. There we saw ruins of an ancient synagogue and visited a 5 chapel location where we also participated in a healing service where I prayed for some of our congregation, for Ukraine and the conflict, and in general for the healing of our world.
My biggest take away from today is the history of the area here with all of the geography and locations that you have to take into account when we are reading the biblical narrative. We’ve had some great learning and teaching so far and I can’t wait for what is to come!
