When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once.
John 13:31-32
Today, we are standing on the threshold of where the divine and human worlds meet.
Judas has just gone out from the room where the disciples are eating. Jesus has identified him as the one who will betray him when his hour comes, but the disciples don’t seem to understand. John then moves on to talk about Glory. God’s glory, Jesus’ glory.
The time of glorification for Jesus is when he is on the cross, that’s the ironic part of all of this. Glory is exactly the authority of God as well as the overwhelming sense of God’s presence with us. That is the threshold Jesus is talking about in Holy Wednesday’s reading. He is both the glory of God in flesh as well as the authority of God to tackle what is coming.
